Dr. Michelo Chilwalo

Dr Michelo Chilwalo is a lecturer in social work at the University of Zambia in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, department of Social Work and Sociology. He is a social worker who has work experience in direct practice, case management, teaching and research both in Zambia and Australia. Besides teaching, over the years he has also been involved in a number of research projects which have also resulted in the publication of reports, peer reviewed articles and a book chapter. Notable among the projects was the five years Girl Power Prrogramme (GPP) which was implemented by Plan International, its partners and the University of Zambia which aimed to promote gender equality and child protection. Women and children, especially girls, still remain the most vulnerable categories in Zambia. They are faced with a myriad of problems such as poverty, lack of opportunities, GBV, early pregnancies and marriages, among others. As a social worker, the quest to understand these encumbrances and how they can be addressed to reduce vulnerability among those affected remains his passion.

He has been working for the University of Zambia for more than fifteen years now. Currently he teaches various courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in social work that include Introduction in Social Work and Social Welfare, Advanced Theories and Principles of Clinical Social Work, Community Development, Social Work with Children and Families among others. He is also involved in the supervision of masters and PhD students in Social Work, Human rights, Governance and Development and Social Protection Management programmes.
