PROGRESSION REGULATIONS

6.1.1 Unsatisfactory Academic Work during the Year

The Board of Studies may, on the recommendation of the relevant Head of Department, exclude any student from a course or subject in a Department on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress in such a course or subject. All students recommended for exclusion under this clause shall be informed individually by the Dean of the School not later than the Friday preceding the end of the last Term.  A student so excluded shall have the right to appeal to the Senate.  Such a student may lodge an appeal against her/his exclusion within one week following notification of her/his exclusion.

6.1.2 Exclusion for Failure to Make Sufficient Academic Progress

6.1.2.1 Every student shall be required to maintain a minimum rate of progress in order to be permitted to continue with her/his studies.  A student who has failed to the extent described below shall not re-enroll for further studies in the University of Zambia without the special permission of the Senate:

*(i) For a full-time student if she/he does not pass the equivalent of three course equivalents or three quarters of the normal load of the year’s work (as the case may require) in each year in which she/he is enrolled as a student, or if over the last two years of her/his studies, she/he not passed in three full year course equivalents, or the equivalent of three quarters of two years’ normal load of full-time study;
(ii) For a part-time or distance education student if she/he does not pass in the equivalent of one full course equivalent or half her/his load in any year in which she/he is enrolled as a student.
6.1.2.2 The Senate may on the recommendation of the Board of Studies may exclude any student repeating a year who does not pass in all the courses in which she/he is registered for that year.
6.1.3 On the recommendation of the Board of Studies the Senate may exclude any student repeating a year who does not pass in all the courses in which she/he is registered for that year.
6.1.4 Notwithstanding the provision of Section 6.1.2 above, a student is required to complete her/his studies within a prescribed limited period.  No student who has not completed her/his studies by the end of the allowable maximum period of study shall be entitled to further enrolment in the University.  The following maximum period shall be allowed for study:
  (a) Certificate or Diploma
 
  One year beyond the normal period of study:

  (b) Degree

(i) full-time student – two years beyond the normal period of study:

(ii) part-time or distance education student – twelve years in all.

6.1.5 (a) Where  a  student  is  absent  from  any  examination  and  the  Board  of  Examiners is of the opinion after investigating the circumstances that his absence was so inexcusable that she/he should be excluded from the programme concerned, the Board of Examiners shall recommend to the Senate that the student be excluded from further study in the programme concerned.

(b) A student who without the permission of the Board of Studies fails to re-enroll for study in any year may be excluded.

6.1.6 (a) No  student  who  had  entered  a  course  of  study for a degree,
diploma or certificate of this University and who had previously been excluded from the course of study shall be permitted to enroll in any course of study for a degree, diploma or certificate in the University without the express permission of the Senate.

(b) No student may enroll in the University without prior permission of the Senate.

(i) No student who has been excluded from any university on the grounds that she/he had failed to make sufficient academic progress, or

(ii) No student who wishes to transfer to this University from another university under the regulations of which she/he required special permission to enroll having failed to make sufficient academic progress.

6.1.7 (a) Application for permission  to  enroll  under  Section  6.1.6  of    
this Regulation must be made on the appropriate form and submitted with the prescribed fee to the Registrar provided:

(i) that such application shall be for enrolment in a course of study different from one out of which the student was excluded for failure to make sufficient academic progress;

(ii) that the course of study is offered in another School;

(iii) that where exclusion was from the University no student shall be entitled to apply for further enrolment in the University.

(b) In granting a student permission to enrol under Section 6.1.6
above the Senate may impose on the student such conditions as it thinks fit:
(i) In relation to the minimum academic progress she/he must make in the year.

(ii) Otherwise in relation to her/his future course of study.
